Sternum: The most likely site of the popping would be near the sternum in one of the joints that attaches a rib to the breast bone. The pectoral muscle is a less likely possibility. A fractured rib would be a very unlikely cause as it would be extremely painful. You or a physician would be able to find that costochondral joint if it's tender to the touch.
