Pain/local swelling: There are some rare individuals that have an allergic response to tetanus toxoid, the active component of the tetanus shot. These folks have major hives, abdominal pain or other strong reactions to the agent & it usually is present early in life with early boosters. These folks should avoid the vaccine .For the majority of us it just hurts & causes the site to swell for a few days.
