A 48-year-old member asked:
What can I do if my skin gets so irritated after shaving?

Dr. Michael Miller answered

Happy Skin: Skin is the major protection of our delicate internal tissues from a harsh environment, it is susceptible to injury itself. Sun, shaving and many chemicals are very irritating as well as constant exposure to moisture reduces protective skin oils and sets the skin up for injury. The trick is to apply good protective skin cream frequently and minimize ongoing damage. Clean it using gentle means.

Dry skin: 1. Hydrate well with water. 2. Avoid lengthy or hot showers. 3. Use sunscreen consistently. 4. Avoid harsh or deodorant soaps - think hypoallergenic & unscented. 5. Only need frequent soap/cleanser on areas that are dirty, oily or create body odor. 6. Use moisturizer as needed. 7. Aim for 8 hours of sleep per night. 8. Maintain a healthy diet.

A 35-year-old female asked:
What are the risks of keeping a lidoderm patch on for more than 12 hours? My skin doesn't seem to be irritated. I don't understand the problem.

Kinda right: The reason for the 12hr comes from manufacturer because they wanted to minimize the risk of toxicity. (hence minimize lawsuits) However, many of us do tell patients that they can keep it on for 24hrs before changing it. As far as I know there have been no cases of toxicity reported.
