Sharp pains: Such sharp, fleeting chest pains brought on by a deep breath are often due to a pinched intercostal nerve or muscle which runs between 2 ribs. This is more of a nuisance disorder that resolves on its own after a day or two. If the symptom persists longer, a cough, fever or true shortness of breath develop, see your physician for evaluation.
