Veins: Since veins carry unoxygenated blood the veins under the tongue can look quite purple. I suspect that the tongue soreness is part of the throat infection. Try bathing the tongue in warm salt water or with maalox for relief. Since your sore throat is improving it is probably a viral rather than strep infection.
