Sudden gas pains and left rib cage pain. what causes this and is it normal?

Requires exam: the most simple explanation is "splenic flexure syndrome": a trapping of gass which rises in the left upper abdomen. Try Gaz-X or Phazyme OTC for gas relief; however I do suggest examination.
