Infection: This sounds like it might be infection, or ingrown nail? Is there any pain under the nail or irritation under then nail? If the redness and swelling spreads further down the finger please see and M.D. soon.

Infection: Infection is likely. Possibly a paronychia which may require a minor drainage procedure to remove a drop or 2 of pus from under the fingernail. Because of this possibility I recommend being evaluated in the hospital emergency room. In the meantime soak the finger in hot(not boiling)water until examined by a physician.
