X-ray: If it is not in pieces sticking out of the skin, the primary way to know is x-ray. Pain/swelling/bruising around the site can be suggestive and the mechanics of the injury can also lead to suspicion, but without an x-ray it is speculation.

Mechanism?: An xray is the only way to know for sure but depending on your symptoms and what you did you may not need one.
