Yes, it's airborne: A flu patient coughs and sneezes into the air. How risky that is to bystanders depends on how many viruses a patient is spewing out, how much time has passed since the cough or sneeze, how fast the air is flowing, which direction the air is flowing, how much inherent protection a bystander has (did he get his vaccine, or already caught that flu strain), what protection he wears (face mask), etc...
