Dr. can evaluate: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold virus, the seasonal flu (antibiotics usually not used for influenza), or from some other causes. A person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep or flu), or has other symptoms as in this case. Hopefully, the patient had her flu vaccine.
