Common: Some irregular bleeding occurs for about 2-5 weeks after Mirena insertion. The low dose of Progesterone causes the endometrial lining to thin. This triggers some shedding of the lining. Overtime this is what leads to light or absent periods with Mirena. If you are experiencing back pain consider seeing a doctor to evaluate this. Back pain is not a typical side effect of an IUD.
