All of the things: you describe can happen in rapid sequence once the throat is irritated and a cough is triggered. The airways can be reactive following an infection (post-infectious reactive airways), triggered by irritants (smoke, gas), tobacco use, or difficulty swallowing. Would consider consulting a specialist in Coughs, either a pulmonary disease or allergy specialist. Good wishes:)
