I am pregnant and i am having an outbreak of herpes. i have acyclovir but i can't remember what dose i should take? i'm 11weeks.

Treating herpes: The usual dose of acyclovir for recurrent genital herpes is 400 mg (2 pills) 3 times a day for 5 days. For oral herpes, usually valacyclovir (Valtrex) in a single dose of 2 grams. Neither of these is different in pregnant women. But the safest thing is to ask your obstetrician. If genital, make sure your Ob knows and ask about daily acyclovir or valacyclovir the last month before delivery.

Aciclovir: This is the NZ formulary official advice for recurrent genital herpes outbreak. 800 mg 3 times daily for 2 days or 200 mg 5 times daily for 5 days or 400 mg 3 times daily for 3–5 days. May be too late if more than 72h. Considered by NZ obstetricians to be safe in pregnancy. Use protection while you have active lesions and see GP if not settling
