Statin drugs: Cholesterol production by the liver is efficiently inhibited by the statin drugs (simvastatin, lipitor, (atorvastatin) Crestor etc). These block an enzyme called hmg coa reductase which is needed for cholesterol production. These drugs are metabolized by the liver and so generally do not have appreciable effects on cholesterol production by other tissues at regular clinical doses.
