Can you get a depression or anxiety prescription from your physician vs a psychiatrist?

Many PCPs do: Many primary care doctors have developed skill, knowledge, and comfort in providing the initial med trials for depression and anxiety. Co-occurring conditions and complex med reactions - best to a specialist like a psychiatrist. Ask about using standard symptom checklists to monitor your symptom response. Talk about your other meds and health issues. It'll help!

Yes or no: Some family practitioners are willing to treat anxiety and depression and are quite knowledgeable about the treatments available. Some shy away from it for various reasons. You can only know by talking to hear primary care practitioner and seeing if they are willing to help out. If your situation is more complex they may recommend a psychiatric consultation and referral to a psychologist.

DEPRESSION/ANXIETY: The most complete evaluation for medication is with a Psychiatrist. First have a physical exam by a Dr. to rule out a physical problem. Please consult with a Clinical Psychologist for psychotherapy to help you with ZOOM.com sessions. Research indicates with psychotherapy you can change & find better coping mechanisms.
