A member asked:

Is it normal to feel a somewhat dull and throbbing pain around where the esophageal sphincter is located after eating a lot of food and feeling full? the pain is not constant and lasts for about a second before it occurs again a few minutes later

Epigastric distress: Discomfort in that region may be from gastric irritation or distension, hiatal hernia or pylorospasm. Pancreatic or gall bladder dysfunction or peptic ulcer would have more long-lasting symptoms. Assuming it's not from just overeating and symptoms persist or worsen, consult your physician or a gastroenterologist for evaluation and advice.

No: Suggest you see a physician. Thoughts include GERD and less likely Esophageal spasms. Standard GERD precautions- dividing meals to 5 to six parts, sitting up 2 hours after meals, avoiding smoking
