A member asked:

What does it mean when they say meningitis only spreads through "prolonged" close contact like in a dorm? what abt home health aides? (never got vax)

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Odd statement: Meningitis can and does spread among those who congregate in dorms, dining halls, or other close venues but I consider the statement inaccurate. Meningococcal & other forms of meningitis can spread in any setting where people get together, including home care, if conditions are right. Those involved in direct patient contact should be vaccinated against any illness they may encounter.
