Need more history: You need to give a good history. Did you injure the thumb? If it hurts. What happened to it? A sprain is a diagnosis so to get there you need to start with what if anything happened to the thumb. If you did invite the thumb then get checked out by the doctor

Thumb: You need to know if your thumb is sprained or broken. If broken and it heals out of alignment you will have a bigger problem. Best thing to do is see your doctor who will let you know what is happening. Peace and good health.

Thumb injury fate: I don't think anyone can tell by the fact that you have less or more pain. A bad sprain can hurt as much as a fracture. A bruised or "jammed" joint can hurt a lot if there is a lot of swelling. An x-ray will help as will am exam . A jam can end up fractured and some ligament injury can need surgery while many fractures do not. Exam and x-ray that's the way to tell.
