A member asked:

I have noticed my 3yo son licking his hands off & on. not every day but pretty frequently. is this normal?

Probably: Kids go though such phases. Licking his hands may be similar to pica, i.e., eating non-food items like paint chips or dirt. It may be due to anemia in some children. It would be prudent to see his pediatrician to rule out anemia or other causes for the habit. Wish you and your son good health!

No: This may have started for a reason and now has become a habit. Encourage hand washing and distract him when it occurs. Ignore it as often as you can. A star chart may work. All the best.
