TMD possible: If you have clicking in the jaw, it could be a sign of tmd, temporomandibular disorder. There are other symtoms such as headaches, painful chewing, limited opening, and a "sore face". Many times there is not one sole cause, but many factors that contribute to it. Those include trauma, arthritis, bad occlusion or bite, and grinding or clenching. The best way to diagnose is to see your dentist.

Displaced/dislocated: Your jaw is either displaced or dislocated. If it click on opening and you can then move your jaw forward and it no longer clicks when you open or close you can probably treat this conservatively. Check with your dentist to see if you can get help there, or a referral to someone who can help you address the cause/effect of your problem.

Displaced TMJ disk: The disk in the jaw joint displaced. If no other symptoms, no treatment indicated. If pain, limited oral opening, bruxism, jaw locking, see TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
