Post IUD pain: IUD's, including the Mirena, are safe and provide a high degree of birth control. The canal through which an IUD is inserted is narrow, and with the irritation of the womb caused by the foreign body being placed within, insertion can cause contractions which an push the IUD back into the canal. If the symptoms do not stop in the next 2-3 days, call your GYN for an exam.

Call your Gyn: Mild discomfort and cramping is not unusual after placement of Mirena, but fever is not expected and usually suggests infection. Unless you have other symtpoms to explain the fever such as sore throat, cough or URI, it is best to report to your doctor.
