Blood tests: When the diagnosis is in doubt multiple blood tests and follow-up blood tests are done in order to make a diagnosis. In prolonged hospitalization multiple blood drawing contributes only slightly to existing anemia. Physicians are aware of this and only order necessary blood tests.
