A member asked:

Is it necessary to have a chaperone present for a pelvic exam? i am seeing a male gyn, but given my history of being raped, i would rather it just be my dr & i to minimize my embarrassment in what will probably be a very triggering situation.

Asst good for both: The presence of a female chaperone is beneficial for both you and the GYN MD during the pelvic examination. You can ask the MD to speak alone with him in Consultation while clothed, but the pelvic exam requires an assistant to hand the MD the necessary instruments and test materials. Moreover, your emotional comfort level will be enhanced by another empathic female present in the exam room.

Pelvic Exam: Please share your concerns w/your doctor. He MAY be able to arrange for something to suit you needs such as a nurse just outside an open door or refer you to a female doc. Sorry for what happened to you in the past. Congrats for moving on. Peace and good health.
