A member asked:

I know someone who has hepatitis b from unwise youthful activity. she is monitored by her dr. however, could you tell me whether hep b can be a direct cause of death by itself or is it true that hep b can lead to other conditions that cause death?

Both: Both are possible, but with proper medical management, both are uncommon. If you want more information than this, speak with the infected person or, with her approval, her doctor.

Both: It can kill you in a few days when you catch it, kill you in a few days when you get a delta virus co-infection, kill you fairly quickly which it is complicated by liver cancer or systemic vasculitis, or cause a lingering death from cirrhosis decades later. It's usually manageable with medications though we don't have a cure yet.
