Both: It can kill you in a few days when you catch it, kill you in a few days when you get a delta virus co-infection, kill you fairly quickly which it is complicated by liver cancer or systemic vasculitis, or cause a lingering death from cirrhosis decades later. It's usually manageable with medications though we don't have a cure yet.
