Imaging Test: Sometimes patients do know what they feel. I would recommend an Xray to see if there is indeed a foreign body in the finger. An exam of the finger in context with a complete physical will also be helpful.

Examination : Is required to work out whether it is a problem of the finger or whether it might be the nerve itself referring pain into the fingertip. A doctor examination would be a good place to start this process and then determine tests as needed (X-ray bloods etc) to sort out

Probably glass: If it feels like a splinter of glass it probably is. Usually not that painful when the finger is not being touched but then when you hit the right spot it causes exquisite pain? Perhaps try soaking your finger in warm-hot water to soften the skin and try massaging below where it is sore - you may be able to encourage it out.
