Toxic shock: You are right, toxic shock syndrome is associated with the use of superabsorbant tampons left inserted for hours. It is caused by bacteria growing for hours in the tampon. If the tampon is changed every 4-6 hours, or less, TSS is very unlikely. Symptoms include fever, chills and rash.
