Hormonal causes: Hormones in our body control ovulation and periods. Anything that affects your hormones can affect your periods. Possible causes are pregnancy, rapid weight changes. thyroid or pituitary problems, ovarian problems (hormonal, cysts, etc.), etc. You should see your GYN or PCP to be screened for these potential problems.
