I was taking metoprolol 100 mg tart cut in half twice a day dr changed to metoprolol er 50 mg once daily. aren't i missing 50 mg somewhere?

Usually the switch: would be for a daily dose equivalent. In other words 50mg twice a day would go to 100mg ER Daily. Perhaps your doctor doesn't think you need as much. Ask him/her.
