About the time a kid begins to fear strangers they also become anxious if you are not in view. They lack the understanding that you are still in the house. It can continue until they are talking. A short term fix might be to take reading material in the room & sit for a while as kid settles. Leave after 10. Leave the door open so he can hear house noises.Tell/show him the door closes if he screams
