I have had a previous reaction (hives) to ceclor. i was recently prescribed amoxicillin and had a severe reaction after 5 days. is this a rare event?

No: You are obviously allergic to penicillin. Penicillins and cephalosporins are related and if you are allergic to one you are risk of being allergic to both. It is very important that you dont take medicines of either group in the future and may consider a medalert bracelet. It isn't that rare.
