A member asked:

Daughter had tonsillectomy & adenoidectomy days ago, has had constant barking cough since then and cough gets worse at night. she's taking cefdinir & hydroco/apap already. can we give her something for this cough? don't want to overmedicate her.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No cough med: That bark cough is not from the lungs but from airway irritation and swelling right below the vocal cords in her trachea. Likely irritated from breathing tube she had in during the surgery. COUGH MEDS WON'T HELP! Do excessive amounts of humidity...take her in shower, run humidifier, boil water on your stove, go to a tropical rain forrest. Anything to increase humidity in the air she's breathing
