A 48-year-old female asked:

what kind of treatment is done for mcl sprain? does a hinge brace help with the sprain? how long does it take to heal? can a sprain turn into a tear?

Brace, weeks to heal: Most MCL sprains often heal on their own with relative rest, and a hinged brace can help relieve pain and stabilize the knee. There are 3 grades, with Grade 1 representing microtearing. Grade 2 is a partial tear and Grade 3 is a full tear. Grade 3s sometimes require surgery. Healing is typically 1-3 weeks for Grade 1, 3-6 weeks for Grade 2 and the longest for Grade 3.

Why does ankle popping occur after a sprain healed?

Possible: Ankle popping is not a diagnostic sign in and of itself. Some people naturally pop their joints easily, others don't. If you continue to have pain or limitation in the range of motion along with popping, it warrants checking to make sure there is no other abnormality, such as missed hairline fracture. If in doubt, go to your primary care provider or the one who took care of your sprain.

How would wearing a knee-brace help with a pinched meniscus?

Dr. Thomas Deberardino
Orthopedic Surgery 32 years experience
Help negate reinjury: A pinched or torn meniscus can cause pain. The torn meniscus can get caught with motion across the joint as the loaded knee flexes and extends. This could cause further damage to the meniscus. The goal of the brace is to limit the risk of further injury or damage to the already injured meniscus.

What should I do to recover from a sprained knee?

Degree dictates plan: A "sprained knee" is not specific enough a diagnosis your recovery pathway. A detailed determination of the actual structures injured and whether the sprain is mild, moderate, or severe will provide adequate information to prescribe a correct treatment algorithm in your case.

Stretch/Strengthen: Most physical therapy is directed to improve range of motion and muscle function. Exercises are designed to improve posture, and decrease pain and stiffness. Injuries are often the result of limited flexibility. Physical therapy can help teach new habits, decrease inflammation, pain, and improve quality of life.
