Not long: Sperm only lives a couple of days in the uterus. The pre-ejaculatory fluid contains some sperm. When they say you got pregnant only the 8th, they probably mean that's when the embryo implanted. You could have fertlized on the 4th or 5th and implanted on the 7th or 8th. It's not an exact science.
