Vinegar helps: The glue like material lice use to anchor the nits to the hair can be loosened by using common vinegar as a wash daily for a week or so. Sometimes a stout pickling vinegar works better. As the acid loosens the attachment a fine tooth nit comb can be drawn through the hair to remove them. It takes time but this has helped many.
