Nerve: If the pain is sharp and fleeting, is brought on by a deep breath or cough, a pinched or irritable intercostal nerve which runs between two ribs may be the cause. This is a nuisance rather than a serious problem and usually resolves on its own. Lung pathology seems less likely, but see your physician if symptoms persist or worsen.
