Ear infection- URI: Ear infections are not contagious. They occur as a continuation of an upper respiratory infection (URI). Samples of ear fluid are rarely done in adults especially if the ear exam does not show sign of infection. You likely have a viral upper respiratory infection- antibiotics are not effective in viral infections.
