Rib cage: Sharp posterior rib cage pain can be due to rib injury, pinched nerve between two ribs, pleurisy or lung inflammation especially if worsened by deep breath and cough. Pneumothorax or pulmonary embolism are accompanied by shortness of breath. See your physician if symptoms persist and appropriate tests and xrays will be ordered.
