Red marrow: reconversion occurs when areas of normal adult yellow marrow(non blood cell producing) change to red marrow(blood cell producing). This can occur in response to various conditions that increase the demand for oxygen-carrying red blood cells: chronic hypoxic states(smoking/COPD), high altitudes, high level athletes, and various anemias.
