HSV EXPOSURE : There's no additional risk from contracting HSV after thyroid cancer as long as you're not on immunosuppressive THERAPY, however there is a high likelihood that you have contracted HSV already But it would be better to see your primary care physician to get testing to confirm it, in the meantime use condoms at all times and also other measures to avoid oral transmission as well.

Preventing herpes: I understand your desire to not catch genital herpes. But your thyroid cancer is no reason for increased concern. HSV2 has no known effect on any other health conditions. Assuming your partner's GH is HSV2, not HSV1, you can use condoms and he can take anti-herpes Rx (e.g. valacyclovir) to reduce risk of transmission. But most GH is mild and easily treated; some couples don't bother to prevent.
