Verify what happened: A couple with a "positive test" needs to verify with their doctors what the test means. Some tests are screening tests, while others are diagnostic tests. If a baby fetus truly has a trisomy 21 (Down) mutation, the couple can consider a therapeutic abortion this time and try for a normal baby in the future. The goal of screening for trisomy mutations is to avoid giving birth to trisomy babies.

What test ?: Some tests are screening tests. These are less invasive, cheaper & designed to select out who would need a confirmatory test that costs more and may be very invasive. If yours was a screening test, your doc can arrange for a confirmatory test. You should base any decisions you make on the best information available.
