Viral pharyngitis: Probably you have viral pharyngitis. If you also have headache, muscle aches, fever, or cough -- or soon develop them -- it could be influenza. Nasal drip is rarely if ever the cause of sore throat, a commonly misunderstood urban myth. When these symptoms occur together, the virus is the direct cause of both. Use acetaminophen for pain; contact your doctor if fever or other severe symptoms.
