It would depend: on a number of factors such as health history, genetics, it can vary metabolic make up etc. And in some case one may not experience the side effects at all. But it is very important to consult your doctor if you plan on quitting drinking so you can do it safely.

Good to stop: Seizures from withdrawal start within a few hours and there is a risk for several days. Shaking is also common in this period. Delirium tremens is a different, more serious entity that comes on after a few days. A dose of thiamine is in order for any heavy drinker. Medication can keep all of these at bay.
