Why worry?: It all depends on why the white blood cell count is elevated. If it is due to infection it will drop to normal as the infection resolves. If it is due to steroid therapy it will return to normal when the dose of steroids is tapered off. If it is due to a form to leukemia it will return to normal with effective therapy. The actual elevated count is less important than the cause.

Why do you ask?: There is no need to treat a lab value. If you feel well and there are no abnormal cells, it is almost never a problem to have a moderately elevated white count. If real disease has been diagnosed, manage the disease using the lab as one parameter.
