Many years, rare: The vast majority of HPV infections, even those with "high risk" (cancer causing) HPV types, never become cancerous. Of the 100+ types of HPV, only one, HPV16, causes oral cancer. Of these, probably less than one in a thousand oral HPV infections lead to cancer. When it happens, it can be anywhere from 1 to 30 years later.
