How is it possible to be pregnant if you've had a period? i thought a period releases the exact things that you need to be pregnant

Correct, you are: It is impossible to have true menstrual period bleeding and be pregnant at the same time. Therefore, one or the other must not be true. The question is, of course, which one? The solution is easy. Presuming no more sexual activities since after these events, if the next menstrual period comes in a few weeks, then there is no pregnancy; or if a pregnancy test is positive, then a baby is on the way.

Pregnancy: Sometimes women can have slight bleeding when baby gets implanted and that can be mistaken as period and one can be pregnant . Usually this bleeding is much lesser than usual menstrual bleeding.
