A member asked:

My son is having surgery for inguinal hernias. can you please help me understand the long term cognitive impacts of general anesthesia in infants?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Animal studies: Animal studies in rats and monkeys suggest that general anesthesia may affect the developing brain. However there are no human studies confirming this. As always there is a need to balance the risk of delaying a needed surgery with the theoretical risk of general anesthesia to infant brains.
