I have had a chronic cough now for about a year. my coughs are not triggered by anything in particular, and nearly always has phlegm/mucus/sputum.

Cough: for a year certainly has a pathologic basis including allergies ,chronic infection like TB or malignancy I hope smoking is not a part of your life you need to be checked and get an xray of your sinuses and chest

Keep in mind...: Allergic rhinitis, asthma and GERD (reflux, heartburn) can cause chronic cough, so if treating it as allergic rhinitis doesn't help you might need to be evaluated or treated for one of the other two.
