Lots of ways: If big enough you can see damage to the tooth. Tooth may be sensitive to heat, cold, or sweets. If long standing cavity nerve of tooth may be infected and you will be in pain. A piece of tooth may chip off. Best way is to see your Dentist who has the knowledge, instruments, and x-ray equipment to evaluate.
