Sprain: This is a sprain and will take a week or so to heal. If black and blue discoloration develop, a torn ligament would be a possibility and it would be recommended to consult a hand surgeon for diagnosis and treatment. In the meantime, apply intermittent cold applications for a couple of days and avoid further strain on your thumb.

MD: See MD may be a sprain , strain , or avulsion fracture. Rest it, ice it 20 minutes several times a day, wrap with ace , elevate it. MD for x rays if pain severe. Take Tylenol for pain prn. Good luck.
