Might be gout: Swollen, hot, painful ankle that comes periodically may be a sign of gout. It may affect other joints like the big toe, knees, foot. Best way to diagnose it to see your doctor during one of these episodes so he or she can take a sample of the fluid from the joint and test it. Try ibuprofen until a stronger med is prescribed. Must make sure it is not an infection too so check with your PCP.
